Licensed professional Counselor
Nathan has been a licensed professional counselor in the state of Tennessee since 2012 and is also recognized as a Nationally Certified Counselor. He has been practicing counseling in the field since 2008, working primarily with older teens and young adults. He has experience in community mental health, residential treatment, private practice, and now directing a counseling center in the university setting. He has done adjunct work at On-Site Workshops in Nashville, TN, using experiential techniques with individuals, couples, and families.
Nathan has a heart for helping people work through traumatic events and painful stories. He is certified in EMDR, which is a specific treatment to help individuals overcome traumas and painful memories, indicating extensive supervision, training, and experience. Nathan also utilizes techniques in session that involve moving the body, most notably utilizing his training in experiential techniques and “psychodrama.” He is a believer that memories are stored in the body, and therefore, healing needs to be done through movement of the body as opposed to sitting in a chair having a traditional conversation as most counselors do. One cannot heal from trauma simply by talking about it. Similarly, Nathan has expertise in adventure therapy techniques, ropes course training, and is proficient in team-building exercises. Nathan is also trained in ego state, which is a trauma-informed practice that allows clients to explore “parts” of themselves that have arisen out of painful experiences to remain safe.
